Educational Q&A

The verse frames a dharmic inquiry: in the face of inevitable losses—property and the death of loved ones—what kind of buddhi (discerning understanding) enables one to dispel śoka (grief). It points toward wisdom grounded in impermanence, right discernment, and inner steadiness rather than external dependence.

In Śānti Parva, Yudhiṣṭhira, burdened by suffering after the war, questions Pitāmaha Bhīṣma for guidance. Here he asks specifically for the mental and ethical insight by which a person can overcome grief when wealth is lost or when close family members die.
