When enmity is enthroned as the guiding motive—especially through a powerful leader—it spreads beyond personal rivalry and becomes a collective disaster. The verse warns that prioritizing vengeance over dharma can lead to the destruction of an entire society.
Vaiśampāyana, narrating to the Bhārata listener (Janamejaya), frames the unfolding devastation of the Kurukṣetra conflict as being driven by Duryodhana placed at the forefront along with his feud—highlighting how his hostility becomes the catalyst for widespread ruin.
