शल्यपर्वणि प्रथमाध्यायः — Karṇa-vadha-anantaraṃ Śalya-niyogaḥ, Saṃjayasya Dhṛtarāṣṭra-nivedanam

एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं तदाचक्ष्व द्विजोत्तम । न हि तृप्यामि पूर्वेषां शृण्वानश्वरितं महत्‌,द्विजश्रेष्ठ! मैं यह सब सुनना चाहता हूँ। मुझे अपने पूर्वजोंका महान्‌ चरित्र सुनते-सुनते तृप्ति नहीं हो रही है, अतः आप इसका वर्णन कीजिये

etad icchāmy ahaṃ śrotuṃ tad ācakṣva dvijottama | na hi tṛpyāmi pūrveṣāṃ śṛṇvānāścaritaṃ mahat ||

ชนเมชัยตรัสว่า “ข้าแต่พราหมณ์ผู้ประเสริฐ ข้าปรารถนาจะฟังเรื่องนี้—โปรดบอกแก่ข้าเถิด เพราะเมื่อได้ฟังวีรกรรมอันยิ่งใหญ่และน่าอัศจรรย์ของบรรพชน ข้าก็มิรู้จักอิ่มเอมเลย ฉะนั้นจงพรรณนาให้พิสดาร”
