Educational Q&A

A ruler-father must restrain and guide his heirs; unchecked ambition and disregard for maryādā (proper limits) destroy both the sons and the father’s peace. Ethical governance begins with self-control and the courage to renounce a destructive, adharma-driven influence—even if it is one’s own child.

In the Sabha Parva context of escalating conflict, a senior voice (reported by Vaiśampāyana) warns the blind king (implicitly Dhṛtarāṣṭra) to keep his sons under discipline and specifically to abandon Duryodhana, portrayed as a ‘kulapāṁsana’ whose conduct threatens the family’s survival and the king’s security in old age.
