Vidura’s Report and Portents

वैशम्पायन उवाच तद्‌ वै श्रुत्वा भीमसेनो त्यमर्षी भृशं निशश्वास तदा5अ$र्तरूप: । राजानुगो धर्मपाशानुबद्धो दहन्निवैनं क्रोधसंरक्तदृष्टि:,वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--जनमेजय! कर्णकी वह बात सुनकर अत्यन्त अमर्षमें भरे हुए भीमसेन बड़ी वेदनाका अनुभव करते हुए उस समय जोर-जोरसे उच्छवास लेने लगे। वे राजा युधिष्ठिरके अनुगामी होकर धर्मके पाशमें बँधे हुए थे। क्रोधसे उनके नेत्र रक्तवर्ण हो रहे थे। वे युधिष्ठिरको दग्ध करते हुए-से बोले

vaiśampāyana uvāca | tad vai śrutvā bhīmaseno 'tyamarṣī bhṛśaṃ niśaśvāsa tadā 'rtarūpaḥ | rājānugo dharmapāśānubaddho dahann ivainaṃ krodhasaṃraktadṛṣṭiḥ |

ไวศัมปายนะกล่าวว่า “โอ้ชนเมชยะ ครั้นภีมเสนได้ยินถ้อยคำของกรรณะ ก็เดือดดาลด้วยโทสะอันยากทน ใบหน้าบิดเบี้ยวด้วยความเจ็บช้ำ และถอนใจลึกซ้ำแล้วซ้ำเล่า แต่เพราะเป็นผู้ตามเสด็จพระราชายุธิษฐิระ เขาจึงยังถูกผูกไว้ด้วยบ่วงแห่งธรรม ดวงตาแดงฉานด้วยความพิโรธ แล้วกล่าววาจาราวกับเผาผลาญยุธิษฐิระด้วยถ้อยคำ”

The verse highlights the ethical tension between righteous restraint (dharma) and the natural surge of anger in the face of perceived wrong. Bhīma’s fury is intense, yet he remains constrained by loyalty to Yudhiṣṭhira and by dharma, showing that moral duty can bind even the strongest impulses.

After hearing a provoking statement or report, Bhīma becomes visibly distressed and enraged—sighing heavily, eyes reddened. Even so, he does not act freely; as Yudhiṣṭhira’s follower, he is held back by dharma. He then begins to speak in a manner that feels ‘burning,’ directed toward Yudhiṣṭhira.
