Cavana’s Tests of Kuśika and the Queen
taṁ deśaṁ samupājagmur jālahastā mahādyute | niṣādā bahavas tatra matsyoddharaṇaniścayāḥ ||
The verse foregrounds intention (niścaya) and livelihood-driven action: a group arrives with a clear resolve to capture fish. In the Anuśāsana context, such scenes often serve to frame ethical reflection on harm, duty, and the moral weight of deliberate action.
Bhīṣma narrates that many Niṣādas, carrying nets, reach a particular place with the purpose of catching/hauling out fish—setting up the next events involving the fish and the consequences of their determined pursuit.
