Adhyāya 196: Droṇa’s Conciliatory Counsel and Karṇa’s Suspicion of Counsel (मन्त्र-नय-विवादः)

यदा तु पर्याप्तमिहास्य क्रीडया तदा देवीं रुदतीं तामुवाच । आनीयतामेष यतो5हमारा- न्ैनं दर्प: पुनरप्याविशेत,जब उनकी वह क्रीड़ा समाप्त हुई, तब वे उस रोती हुई देवीसे बोले--“इस इन्द्रको जहाँ मैं हूँ, यहीं--मेरे समीप ले आओ, जिससे फिर इसके भीतर अभिमानका प्रवेश न हो”

yadā tu paryāptam ihāsya krīḍayā tadā devīṃ rudatīṃ tām uvāca | ānīyatām eṣa yato ’ham ārān nainaṃ darpaḥ punar apy āviśet ||

เมื่อการเริงเล่นของเขาที่นี่พอสมควรแล้ว เขาจึงกล่าวกับเทวีผู้กำลังร่ำไห้ว่า “จงพาอินทราผู้นี้มาที่ซึ่งเราอยู่ มาใกล้เรา เพื่อมิให้ความทะนงตนกลับเข้าครอบงำเขาอีก”

Power and status easily breed darpa (arrogance); therefore even the greatest must be kept under moral restraint and reminded of humility so that pride does not return.
