Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical weight of speech: words spoken without full awareness can create serious moral and social consequences. It also introduces the tension between honoring a respected elder’s utterance and correcting an unintended, potentially harmful instruction—an early Mahābhārata example of dharma becoming complex when circumstances shift.

Kuntī, inside the hut and not seeing what her sons have brought, tells them to share it together, assuming it is alms. When she then sees that what they have brought is Draupadī, she realizes her statement has inadvertently implied sharing her as well, and she laments that an improper word has escaped her.
