Educational Q&A

The verse highlights a governance-and-family ethic: preventing internal division is treated as a paramount good. The king’s decision is presented as a measure to safeguard fraternity and collective stability, suggesting that social harmony and unity can be prioritized when rivalry threatens to fracture a righteous household.

In the aftermath of Draupadī’s svayaṃvara, a situation arises that could set the brothers against one another. The king, fearing mutual discord, addresses the brothers together and declares that Draupadī will be the wife of all of them, thereby averting competition and preserving unity.
