Vasiṣṭha as Purohita: Ascetic Mastery and Royal Counsel

जनमेजय! उस चीत्कारसे भयभीत हो उस राक्षसके परिवारके लोग अपने सेवकोंके साथ घरसे बाहर निकल आये। योद्धाओंमें श्रेष्ठ बलवान्‌ भीमसेनने उन्हें भयसे अचेत देखकर ढाढ़स बँधाया और उनसे यह शर्त करा ली कि “अबसे कभी तुमलोग मनुष्योंकी हिंसा न करना। जो हिंसा करेंगे, उनका शीघ्र ही इसी प्रकार वध कर दिया जायगा” || २-- ४१।। तस्य तद्‌ वचन श्रुत्वा तानि रक्षांसि भारत | एवमस्त्विति त॑ प्राहुर्जगूहु: समयं च तम्‌,भारत! भीमकी यह बात सुनकर उन राक्षसोंने 'एवमस्तु” कहकर वह शर्त स्वीकार कर ली

Vaiśampāyana uvāca: tasya tad vacanaṃ śrutvā tāni rakṣāṃsi bhārata | evam astv iti taṃ prāhur jagūhuḥ samayaṃ ca tam ||

โอ ภารตะ! ครั้นได้ฟังถ้อยคำของภีมะแล้ว เหล่ารากษสก็กล่าวว่า “เอวมัสตุ—เป็นเช่นนั้นเถิด” และยอมรับพันธสัญญานั้นไว้

Educational Q&A

Power is ethically justified when it protects the vulnerable and sets enforceable limits on harm. Bhīma’s threat functions as deterrence: wrongdoing is checked by a clear rule (no violence toward humans) and a consequence for violating it.

After being confronted by Bhīma, the rākṣasas hear his condition and respond “evam astu” (“so be it”). They accept the stipulated pact (samaya) and commit to observing it.
