Saṃvaraṇa’s Petition and Tapatī’s Conditioned Consent (सम्वरण-तपती संवादः)

कुर्यान्न निन्दितं कर्म न नृशंसं कथंचन । इति पूर्वे महात्मान आपद्धर्मविदो विदु:,आपद्धर्मके ज्ञाता प्राचीन महात्माओंने कहा है कि किसी प्रकार भी क्रूर एवं निन्दित कर्म नहीं करना चाहिये। अतः आज अपनी पत्नीके साथ स्वयं मेरा विनाश हो जाय, यह श्रेष्ठ है; किंतु ब्राह्यणवधकी अनुमति मैं कदापि नहीं दे सकता

kuryān na ninditaṃ karma na nṛśaṃsaṃ kathaṃcana | iti pūrve mahātmāna āpaddharmavido viduḥ ||

พราหมณ์กล่าวว่า “ไม่ว่ากรณีใด ๆ ไม่พึงกระทำกรรมอันน่าติเตียน และไม่พึงกระทำความโหดร้ายไม่ว่าประการใด ดังนี้มหาตมะในกาลก่อน ผู้รู้ธรรมยามคับขัน ได้ประกาศไว้ เพราะฉะนั้น แม้วันนี้เราจะพินาศพร้อมภรรยา ก็ยังประเสริฐกว่า; แต่เราจะไม่ยินยอมต่อการฆ่าพราหมณ์เป็นอันขาด”

Even in extreme distress (āpaddharma), one must not justify cruel or censured actions; certain moral boundaries—especially the prohibition against killing a brāhmaṇa—are upheld as inviolable, and personal loss is preferable to committing grave adharma.

A brāhmaṇa, speaking under pressure of a crisis, cites the authority of ancient dharma-knowers to refuse any consent to a cruel, blameworthy act—specifically brāhmaṇa-killing—declaring that he would rather perish with his wife than allow such a sin.
