Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical and human dimension of dharma: separation from a worthy, beloved protector or ruler can generate intense inner suffering. It underscores the value of supportive relationships and the emotional cost when guidance and companionship are withdrawn.

Vaiśampāyana reports a lament addressed to a king described as “lotus-eyed.” The speaker declares that from this day onward, in the king’s absence, heart-withering troubles and anxieties will dominate him—expressing grief and dependence created by impending separation.
