Educational Q&A

The verse underscores how dynastic outcomes unfold through time and circumstance: even royal plans for heirs are subject to the slow, often opaque workings of fate and biological reality, setting the stage for later ethical tensions in the Kuru lineage.

Vaiśampāyana narrates that Gāndhārī conceives by Dhṛtarāṣṭra and continues to carry the pregnancy for two years, a prolonged gestation that foreshadows the unusual birth circumstances of the Kauravas in the surrounding passage.
