Educational Q&A

The verse frames Duryodhana’s birth as an event to be assessed by elders and counselors (Bhīṣma and Vidura). In the Mahābhārata’s ethical world, such reports invite reflection on dharma: how rulers should heed wise counsel and consider the long-term welfare of the realm when signs of future harm appear.

Vaiśampāyana says that the account was conveyed to Bhīṣma and the wise Vidura, and he marks the specific day of Duryodhana’s birth as the narrative pivot for the ensuing description of accompanying portents and reactions in the Kuru household.
