Concept: Outer qualities of land are read as indicators of suitability and social-ritual alignment, reflecting dharmic ordering in settlement and sacred building.
Application: Use sensory inspection (color/odor) as an initial screening in site selection, then corroborate with broader vāstu tests (stability, drainage, orientation, omens).

It teaches bhūmi-parīkṣā (testing and grading soil) using observable markers—especially color and characteristic odor—to determine suitability of land for different social/ritual contexts.
Beyond mythology, the Agni Purana preserves applied sciences like Vāstu-śāstra: practical rules for selecting land for building, linking sensory diagnostics (smell/color) with social-ritual suitability.
Choosing properly qualified land is presented as supporting purity and auspicious outcomes in construction and worship, while avoiding inauspicious sites believed to lead to obstacles and ritual impurity.
