Chapter 55 — Piṇḍikā-lakṣaṇa-kathana
Defining Features of the Pedestal/Base for Icons
पिण्डिकार्धेन वा तुल्यं दैर्घ्यमीशस्य कीर्तितम् ईशं वा तुल्यदीर्घञ्च ज्ञात्वा सूत्रं प्रकल्पयेत्
piṇḍikārdhena vā tulyaṃ dairghyamīśasya kīrtitam īśaṃ vā tulyadīrghañca jñātvā sūtraṃ prakalpayet
Lord Agni (in dialogue tradition, instructing the sage Vasiṣṭha)
Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Shilpa","secondary_vidya":"Vastu","practical_application":"Setting the canonical overall height/length of an Īśa-mūrti relative to the pedestal (piṇḍikā) and preparing a calibrated measuring cord (sūtra) for consistent sculptural proportions.","sutra_style":true}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Procedure","entry_title":"Īśa-pratimā dīrgha-māna & sūtra-kalpanā (measuring-cord calibration)","lookup_keywords":["Īśa-pratimā","piṇḍikā-ardha","dīrgha-māna","sūtra","pratimā-lakṣaṇa"],"quick_summary":"Fix the icon’s length by a pedestal-based standard (half the piṇḍikā), then prepare the sūtra (measuring cord) to replicate that standard across all subsequent measurements."}
Concept: Pramāṇa (right measure) as the basis of sacred form-making.
Application: Use a single calibrated sūtra so the icon’s proportions remain internally consistent and ritually acceptable.
Khanda Section: Vastu-vidya / Pratima-Lakshana (Iconometry and measurement rules)
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A sthapati measures a Śiva icon beside a pedestal (piṇḍikā), stretching a knotted measuring cord (sūtra) to set the icon’s length by the half-piṇḍikā rule.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala temple mural style, sthapati with palm-leaf manual and measuring cord, unfinished Śiva mūrti and piṇḍikā on workshop floor, earthy reds and ochres, clear linework, sacred craft ambience","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting, gold-leaf accents on tools and halo motifs, artisan measuring a Śiva icon with sūtra, pedestal prominently shown, rich maroons and greens, ornate borders","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting, instructional composition showing piṇḍikā and icon with marked proportional lines, sthapati demonstrating half-measure with cord, soft shading and delicate detailing","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, atelier scene with sculptor and assistants, precise measuring cord stretched from pedestal to icon, architectural workshop details, fine brushwork and muted palette"}

Sandhi Resolution Notes:
Related Themes: Agni Purana 55 (Pratimā-lakṣaṇa: māna-pramāṇa sections)
It gives an iconometric rule: the icon’s length is proportioned to the pedestal (piṇḍikā), and it instructs the artisan to set up the measuring cord (sūtra) based on the established standard.
Beyond theology, it preserves practical Vāstu-vidyā and śilpa (craft) standards—showing the Agni Purana as a manual that includes temple design, sculpture measurement, and ritual-technical procedures.
Correct proportioning of a deity’s icon is treated as essential for proper installation and worship; accuracy in measure supports ritual efficacy and is traditionally linked with merit (puṇya) through correctly performed sacred craftsmanship.
