Related Themes: Agni Purana 47 (Śālagrāma-pūjā instructions surrounding this maxim); Agni Purana 46 (lakṣaṇa of sacred forms: basis for correct arcana)
It introduces the Śālagrāma-arcana method tied to Viṣṇu’s principal emblems (beginning with the cakra) and teaches that ritual efficacy depends not merely on external rank or grandeur but on proper performance and intent.
By codifying a specific Vaiṣṇava worship-technology (Śālagrāma arcana and emblem-based identification), it exemplifies the Agni Purāṇa’s wide scope—preserving practical liturgical rules alongside theology and ethics.
It asserts that outwardly ‘superior’ worship can become meritless if devoid of right disposition or correctness, while sincere and properly executed arcana—even if simple—yields spiritual fruit (puṇya) and divine favor.
