Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Procedure","entry_title":"Indriya-varma Nyāsa with Vāṃ, Deṃ and Yaṃ","lookup_keywords":["indriya-varma","karmendriya","jñānendriya","nyāsa","tāḍana"],"quick_summary":"A practical protective mapping is given: specific bījas are assigned as 'armor' to action- and knowledge-faculties, applied with tāḍana and then balanced by a regulating bīja."}

Concept: Indriya-governance through ritualized protection: faculties are sacralized and stabilized by mantra-nyāsa (varma) and balancing bīja.

Application: Use the mapping as a pre-meditative safeguard: protect senses/actions from distraction and ritual impurity before deeper mantra-japa or homa.

Khanda Section: Puja-vidhi / Mantra-tantra (Protective rites and mantra-nyasa for sense-faculties)

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"The practitioner performs nyāsa on the disciple’s body: touching specific regions associated with organs of action and cognition, visualized as protective armor layers labeled vāṃ and deṃ, then a harmonizing yaṃ aura.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural: stylized nyāsa touches on hands, feet, eyes, ears; glowing script-like bījas 'vāṃ' and 'deṃ' as armor bands; a soft green 'yaṃ' aura unifying the figure; temple-ritual ambience.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore: gold-embossed protective bands on limbs and sense-centers, priest applying nyāsa; ornate borders with bīja syllables; rich reds and gold emphasizing 'varma'.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore: diagrammatic yet traditional—clear placement of karmendriyas and jñānendriyas, priest’s hand positions, subtle bīja labels; calm instructional clarity.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature: intimate ritual scene with fine detail; the disciple seated while the officiant touches sense-centers; translucent calligraphic bīja overlays; elegant interior textiles."}

FAQs

It teaches a protective mantra-application (varma/nyāsa) for the faculties: using specific bīja-mantras—vāṃ for organs of action and deṃ for organs of cognition—performed along with tāḍana (ritual tapping) and concluded with ‘namaḥ’.

Beyond mythic narration, it preserves practical ritual technology: seed-syllable mapping to psycho-physical functions (indriyas), procedural steps (tāḍana-ādi), and protective ‘armor’ applications—typical of the Agni Purana’s wide coverage of liturgy, mantra-science, and applied spirituality.

By ritually ‘arming’ and harmonizing the sense-faculties, the practitioner aims to restrain distraction, prevent impurity in action and perception, and stabilize worship—supporting purity (śuddhi) and steadiness (sthiti) in sādhanā.
