इति श्रीमार्कण्डेयपुराणे गङ्गावतारो नाम षट्पञ्चाशोऽध्यायः ।

सप्तपञ्चाशोऽध्यायः- ५७ ।

क्रौष्टुकिरुवाच भगवन् ! कथितन्त्वेतज्जम्बूद्वीपं समासतः ।

यदेतद्भवता प्रोक्तं कर्म नान्यत्र पुण्यदम् ॥

ఇట్లు శ్రీ మార్కండేయ పురాణంలోని ‘గంగావతరణ’ అనే యాభై ఆరవ అధ్యాయం సమాప్తమైంది. ఇప్పుడు యాభై ఏడవ అధ్యాయం. క్రౌష్టుకి అన్నాడు— భగవన్, మీరు జంబూద్వీపాన్ని సంక్షేపంగా వివరించారు. అలాగే ఇతరత్ర కర్మ ఇక్కడిలా పుణ్యఫలప్రదం కాదని కూడా చెప్పారు.
