Angada’s Embassy and the Breach of Laṅkā’s Ramparts
ātmanā saptamaḥ kṛṣṇām idaṃ vacanam atravīt | kuśalaṃ te varārohe bhartāras te 'py anāmayāḥ ||
The verse foregrounds dhārmic courtesy and compassion: before speaking further, one inquires after another’s welfare and the welfare of those dependent on or connected to them. Such concern for health and safety is presented as a basic ethical norm of respectful speech.
In Vaiśaṃpāyana’s narration, the seventh speaker addresses Draupadī (Kṛṣṇā) directly, beginning with a conventional welfare inquiry—asking whether she is well and whether her husbands are also unharmed—setting a respectful tone for the ensuing conversation.
