Adhyāya 42 — Mahābhūta–Indriya–Adhyātma-Vyavasthā
Brahmā’s Instruction on Elements and Faculties
yathāgnir indhanair iddho mahājyotiḥ prakāśate | tathendriya-nirodhena mahān ātmā prakāśate ||

Sense-restraint (indriya-nirodha) is presented as the practical means by which the inner Self’s luminosity becomes evident. As fuel makes fire blaze visibly, disciplined control of the senses makes the Self’s presence and clarity more directly experienced.
Vāyudeva is instructing the listener through a vivid simile: fire’s radiance increases when properly fed, and likewise the ‘great Self’ becomes manifest when the senses are brought under control. The verse functions as a didactic moment emphasizing yogic discipline within the broader post-war ethical-spiritual instruction of the parva.
