Bhīṣma states a general dharmic principle: right conduct yields substantial success (siddhi) and protects one from misfortune (āpada). The verse emphasizes the tangible, this-worldly benefit of ethical living, not merely abstract virtue.
In the Anuśāsana Parva’s instructional setting, Bhīṣma continues advising on dharma and proper conduct. This line functions as a concise assurance of the results of following the prescribed ethical discipline: prosperity in aims and avoidance of distress.
