Merit-Exhaustion, Rebirth, and the Critique of Pride

yayātir uvāca yat tvaṁ me hṛdayāj jāto vayaḥ svaṁ na prayacchasi | jarādoṣas tvayā proktas tasmāt tvaṁ pratipatsyase ||

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical weight of filial responsibility and the consequences of refusing a rightful request within a moral framework: one who points out the hardships of duty yet withholds help may be made to face those very hardships.

In the Yayāti episode, the king seeks to obtain youth from his son to postpone old age. Here Yayāti rebukes the son who refuses, declaring that he will himself experience the defects of old age—functioning as a curse-like pronouncement within the story.
