Chapter 74: Non-anger, Forbearance, and the Ethics of Residence

yathā havāhavānīyo 'gnir gārhapatyāt praṇīyate | tathā tvattaḥ prasūto 'yaṃ tvam ekaḥ san dvidhā kṛtaḥ ||

Educational Q&A

The verse uses Vedic ritual symbolism to affirm legitimate lineage: as one sacred fire can manifest as another without losing its identity, a parent remains one yet continues in the child. Ethically, it underscores the duty to acknowledge one’s offspring and uphold familial and royal responsibility.

Duṣyanta speaks to validate the child’s origin, comparing the child’s emergence from the mother to the ritual bringing forth of the Āhavanīya fire from the Gārhapatya. It functions as a public affirmation of birth and continuity of the family line.
