Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Puja-vidhi","secondary_vidya":"Mantra","practical_application":"Instruction to employ a pavitraka-sūtra conceived as pervaded by Nārāyaṇa and Aniruddha (Vyūha aspect), used for pavitrīkaraṇa and to secure varṣa-pūjā-phala; guides the devotional visualization (bhāvanā) while wearing/placing the thread.","sutra_style":true}

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Description","entry_title":"Nārāyaṇa–Aniruddha-maya Pavitraka-sūtra (consecrated purifier-thread)","lookup_keywords":["pavitraka-sūtra","nārāyaṇamaya","aniruddhamaya","vyūha","varṣa-pūjā"],"quick_summary":"Defines the pavitraka as a sacred thread infused with Viṣṇu (Nārāyaṇa) and Aniruddha; the rite is framed as purification and as completing the annual worship’s merit."}

Concept: Bhāvanā (conceptual infusion) sanctifies material supports: the thread becomes ‘Nārāyaṇa-maya’ through consecration and contemplative identification; Aniruddha indicates Vyūha-based theology of divine immanence.

Application: During pavitraka-dhāraṇa/āropaṇa, mentally install Nārāyaṇa and Aniruddha in the sūtra while performing nyāsa/saṃkalpa per tradition.

Khanda Section: Puja-vidhi (Pavitri-dharana and Varsha-puja rites)

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: bhakti

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A consecrated sacred thread (pavitraka-sūtra) shown prominently, with subtle divine radiance; a Vaiṣṇava priest performs nyāsa/saṃkalpa, envisioning Nārāyaṇa and Aniruddha pervading the thread before offering/placing it.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural: Vaiṣṇava priest before Nārāyaṇa image, holding a luminous pavitraka thread, stylized conch and discus motifs floating as symbols of infusion, warm ochre-red palette, temple lamp glow.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore: Nārāyaṇa with gold halo and rich ornaments, pavitraka thread rendered with gold embossing in the foreground, symbolic Aniruddha presence via radiant aura and chakra motif, ornate arch frame.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore: instructional composition—close-up of pavitraka-sūtra with knots/loops, priest performing hand-gestures (nyāsa), small icons of śaṅkha-cakra-gadā-padma, clean lines and soft colors.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature: detailed ritual table with thread, flowers, conch, bell; priest visualizing Viṣṇu forms, subtle aura motifs, fine textile patterns and architectural niche."}

FAQs

It prescribes the use of a pavitri-sūtra (purificatory sacred thread/cord) in ritual practice, described as Vaishnava in character (imbued with Nārāyaṇa and Aniruddha) and as a means to obtain the merit of annual worship (varṣa-pūjā).

Alongside theology, the Agni Purana functions as a practical ritual handbook: this verse preserves concise procedural doctrine about purificatory implements (pavitri), their theological identification, and the promised ritual result (phala), reflecting its manual-like coverage of worship techniques.

Wearing/using the pavitri-sūtra is presented as a purifier (pavitrīkaraṇa) and as a phala-producing act—conferring the merit associated with varṣa-pūjā by aligning the rite with Viṣṇu (Nārāyaṇa/Aniruddha).
