ईश्वर उवाच । ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि यत्र जांबवती नदी । पुरा जांबवतीनाम विष्णोर्या महिषीप्रिया । अपृच्छदर्जुनं साध्वी वद वार्तां कुरू द्वह
īśvara uvāca | tato gacchenmahādevi yatra jāṃbavatī nadī | purā jāṃbavatīnāma viṣṇoryā mahiṣīpriyā | apṛcchadarjunaṃ sādhvī vada vārtāṃ kurū dvaha
ஈஸ்வரன் கூறினார்—மகாதேவி, அதன் பின் ஜாம்பவதீ நதி ஓடும் இடத்திற்குச் செல்ல வேண்டும். முற்காலத்தில் விஷ்ணுவின் பிரியமான மகிஷி, சதியான ஜாம்பவதீ அர்ஜுனனை வினவினாள்—‘செய்தியைச் சொல்; உண்மையாய் சொல், எதையும் மறைக்காதே।’
