Soma Pavamāna

Inside Sukta 27

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Soma is introduced as the praised kavi delighting upon the purifier, beginning the act of self-cleansing.

  2. Development

As he purifies, he becomes luminous and goal-seeking—crying out for the radiant ‘herds’ and asserting unfailing victory.

  3. Climax

Soma’s power peaks as the mighty tawny bull surges through the mid-region and moves decisively toward Indra.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn settles on Soma’s completed purification as a force that removes harm and reinforces Indra’s victorious, ordered power.

The deity: Soma Pavamāna

  • In the VedaSoma is lauded as the self-purifying, inspired seer (kavi) who delights on the filter, becomes luminous (gold-seeking), and smites deceit and injury while flowing in a mighty, tawny surge.
  • Cosmic functionHe mediates between realms as a vitalizing current—purified on the sieve, he becomes the energizing elixir that empowers Indra and sustains ṛta (cosmic order) through victory and clarity.
  • Inner significanceThe refining of Soma mirrors the refinement of consciousness: impulses and distortions are filtered out, leaving a clear, potent inner ‘sap’ that strengthens will, discernment, and truthful power.
