Sukta 8.97

Devata

Indra

Inside Sukta 97

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Indra is praised for bringing enjoyments and solar-rich gains from Asuric/hostile forces, and the poet asks that these powers increase the singer and the well-prepared sacrificers.

  2. Development

The hymn turns into a direct ritual invitation: Indra is asked to sit with the worshippers in the pressed Soma and to fashion “great help” for the jaritṛ (singer).

  3. Climax

A protective vision emerges: ṛta itself is invoked to guard the speaker, while Indra is asked to carry one beyond duritā like waters bearing a traveler across.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn ends with an earnest question-prayer for the gift of full, overflowing prosperity—universal, desirable, and longed-for—under Indra’s kingship.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is the mighty Vajrin (wielder of the thunderbolt), Maghavan (the bounteous giver), heroic protector of the singer and sacrificer, and the victorious power who brings radiant gains from adversarial forces.

  • Inner significanceIndra signifies the awakened force of will and courageous clarity that breaks inner obstruction, protects the seeker through ṛta, and turns struggle into strength, joy, and expansive prosperity.
