Devata

Agni

Chandas

Trishtubh (probable; verify in critical edition)

Mantra 2

Mantra 3

Mantra 4

Inside Sukta 22

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A call to sing ‘as Atri would’ to the purifying flame, establishing lineage authority and Agni’s centrality in the rite (RV 5.22.1).

  2. Development

Agni is praised as the sought-after Hotṛ and as the divine with discerning mind; mortals turn toward him for help and protection (ūti/avas) (cf. RV 5.22.3).

  3. Climax

Direct address: Agni is asked to recognize the poets’ word; the hymn foregrounds the performative power of inspired speech in making Agni blaze forth.

  4. Where it settles

The Atri poets ‘increase’ and adorn Agni with hymns—ending in confident affirmation that praise itself sustains the divine presence (RV 5.22.4).

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the pāvaka-śociṣ (purifying flame), the īḍya Hotṛ to be sought in adhvaras, and the household lord (dampati) who carries hymns and offerings to the gods.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between humans and devas: he kindles the rite, conveys oblations, and establishes ṛta through the orderly performance of yajña.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened inner fire—discernment, aspiration, and transformative clarity—by which speech becomes effective prayer and intention becomes consecrated action.

The seer

  • Atri (Ātreya)Ātreya (Atri-gotra; Atri family of Mandala 5) · A major Rigvedic seer whose family collection (Mandala 5) strongly centers on Agni and the sacrificial order; famed in later tradition as a primordial ṛṣi and exemplar of tapas and inspired hymncraft.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a short hymn where the Atri seers praise Agni as the purifying fire and the Hotar of the sacrifice, asking him to accept their words and protect the rite.

It marks the hymn as belonging to the Atri tradition and invokes the authority of that lineage’s style of praise—implying the chant is offered in the proper, time-tested way.

In Vedic thought, praise and ritual speech actively strengthen Agni’s presence: the fire brightens outwardly, and the divine help (avas/ūti) becomes more accessible to the worshippers.
