Proposal for Rāma’s Installation as Heir-Apparent
ते तमूचुर्महात्मानं पौरजानपदैस्सह।बहवो नृप कल्याणा गुणाः पुत्रस्य सन्ति ते।।2.2.26।।
te tam ūcur mahātmānaṃ paura-jānapadaiḥ saha |
bahavo nṛpa kalyāṇā guṇāḥ putrasya santi te || 2.2.26 ||
அப்போது நகரவாசிகளும் நாட்டுமக்களும் உடன், அவர்கள் அந்த மகாத்ம அரசனை நோக்கி—“அரசே! உங்கள் புதல்வனிடம் பல நற்குணங்களும் புகழத்தக்க சிறப்புகளும் உள்ளன” என்று கூறினர்।
Those kings along with the inhabitants of towns and villages answered the magnanimous king: O king! your son, indeed has many auspicious and admirable virtues.
Dharma is succession based on guṇa (merit). The assembly grounds political choice in ethical excellence, implying that rightful authority should correspond to virtue.
In response to Daśaratha’s doubts, the assembly explains that their wish is motivated by the prince’s outstanding qualities.
Rāma’s kalyāṇa-guṇas (auspicious virtues) as the basis for public trust and legitimacy.
