Ekādaśī Vrata-Vidhi and the Galava–Bhadrashīla Itihāsa
Dharmakīrti before Yama
यानि कानि च पापानि ब्रह्महत्यादिकानि च । अन्नमाश्रित्य तिष्ठन्ति तानि च मुनीश्वर । एकादश्यां निराहारो यदि मुक्तिमभीप्सति ॥ ९ ॥
yāni kāni ca pāpāni brahmahatyādikāni ca | annamāśritya tiṣṭhanti tāni ca munīśvara | ekādaśyāṃ nirāhāro yadi muktimabhīpsati || 9 ||
எத்தகைய பாவங்களாயினும்—பிரம்மஹத்த்யை முதலியவை—அவை அன்னத்தைச் சார்ந்து தங்குகின்றன. ஆகவே, ஓ முனீஸ்வரரே, முக்தியை நாடினால் ஏகாதசியில் நிராஹாரமாக இருக்க வேண்டும்.

It teaches that many sins are sustained through attachment to food and indulgence; observing nirāhāra (fasting) on Ekādaśī is presented as a direct discipline for purification and a support for mokṣa-oriented life.
Ekādaśī is traditionally dedicated to Bhagavān (especially Viṣṇu); fasting becomes an act of self-offering and sense-restraint that strengthens remembrance and devotion, aligning bodily practice with bhakti and liberation.
Practical kalpa/ācāra (ritual discipline) is implied: timing one’s vrata by the tithi (Ekādaśī) and performing nirāhāra as a regulated observance—an applied dharma practice rather than grammar or astrology.
