มารกัณฑेयกล่าวว่า “ทานเช่นนั้นย่อมไม่พาผู้ให้หรือพราหมณ์ผู้รับให้ข้ามพ้นไปได้เลย—หาไม่” ควรถวายโคเพียงตัวเดียวแก่พราหมณ์เพียงผู้เดียว มิใช่แบ่งให้หลายคน; เพราะเมื่อโคที่ถวายเป็นทานถูกขาย แล้วนำราคาไปแบ่งกัน ความศักดิ์สิทธิ์แห่งทานย่อมสูญสิ้น หากโคทานถูกขาย ย่อมก่อโทษแก่เชื้อสายของผู้ให้ถึงสามชั่วคน; มันไม่อาจเกื้อกูลทั้งผู้ให้และพราหมณ์ผู้รับให้พ้นได้
