इत्य् आग्नेये महापुराणे अलङ्कारे काव्यदोषविवेको नाम षट्चत्वारिंशदधिकत्रिशततमो ऽध्यायः अथ अधिकत्रिशततमो ऽध्यायः एकाक्षराभिधानं अग्निर् उवाच एकाक्षराभिधनञ्च मातृकान्तं वदामि ते अ विष्णुः प्रतिषेधः स्यादा पितामहवाक्ययोः

ity āgneye mahāpurāṇe alaṅkāre kāvyadoṣaviveko nāma ṣaṭcatvāriṃśadadhikatriśatatamo 'dhyāyaḥ atha adhikatriśatatamo 'dhyāyaḥ ekākṣarābhidhānaṃ agnir uvāca ekākṣarābhidhanañca mātṛkāntaṃ vadāmi te a viṣṇuḥ pratiṣedhaḥ syādā pitāmahavākyayoḥ

இவ்வாறு அக்னி மகாபுராணத்தின் அலங்காரப் பகுதியில் ‘காவ்யதோஷவிவேகம்’ எனும் 346ஆம் அதிகாரம் நிறைவுற்றது. இப்போது 347ஆம் அதிகாரம் ‘ஏகாட்சராபிதானம்’ தொடங்குகிறது. அக்னி கூறினார்—மாத்ருகா (வர்ணமாலை) உடன் கூடிய ஒரெழுத்துப் பெயர்களை உனக்குச் சொல்கிறேன். ‘அ’ விஷ்ணுவைக் குறிக்கும்; ‘ஆ’ முதலியவற்றின் பயன்பாடு பிதாமஹன் பிரம்மாவின் வாக்கின்படி அறியப்பட வேண்டும்।
