Janārdana is a revered epithet of Viṣṇu, often also used for Kṛṣṇa, indicating the Lord who removes suffering and protects beings.
It introduces Vasiṣṭha’s forthcoming explanation of the cause and manner of the Lord’s manifestation on earth—framed as a descent from the heavenly realm.
The verse implies that divine manifestation is purposeful and intelligible within dharma: the Lord’s appearing in the world is not random, and attentive listening to sacred narration is presented as the proper way to understand it.
