Unspecified (narratorial instruction within a dharma/śauca teaching context)

Concept: External śauca (bodily cleanliness) is necessary because contact with mala (bodily filth) produces a ritual-ethical impurity that must be removed.

Application: Maintain personal hygiene before japa, pūjā, temple entry, and meals; treat cleanliness as a devotional discipline rather than vanity.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: bibhatsa

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A quiet riverside āśrama courtyard where a devotee performs careful ablutions, washing away grime and applying clean cloth before approaching a small Vishnu shrine. The composition contrasts the heaviness of bodily impurity with the calm order of ritual cleanliness—water vessels, fragrant herbs, and neatly arranged worship items.","primary_figures":["a Vaishnava householder/devotee","a small Vishnu murti (or śālagrāma) on a pedestal"],"setting":"āśrama or temple antechamber with bathing area, copper lotā, clean cloth, incense stand, and a simple altar","lighting_mood":"temple lamp-lit","color_palette":["copper bronze","ivory white","sandalwood beige","deep indigo","leaf green"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: a Vaishnava devotee in spotless white dhoti after bathing, standing before a small Vishnu shrine with śālagrāma on a gold-embellished pedestal; ornate arch (prabhāvali) with gold leaf, rich vermilion and emerald borders, gem-studded ornaments on the deity, copper water pot and conch placed symmetrically, subtle depiction of removed grime as dark tones outside the sanctified space.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: an intimate courtyard scene beside a clear stream; delicate brushwork shows a devotee washing hands and feet, then draping clean cloth; a tiny Vishnu shrine with tulasi pot nearby, cool palette with soft blues and greens, refined facial features, lyrical naturalism, distant hills and flowering trees framing the act of purification.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold black outlines and natural pigments; a devotee performing snāna and śauca in a temple corridor, Vishnu icon in the background with characteristic large eyes; dominant red, yellow, and green fields, stylized water patterns, ritual vessels rendered with flat decorative geometry.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: a sanctified bathing pavilion leading to a Krishna/Vishnu altar; intricate floral borders and lotus motifs; attendants holding water pots, conch and bell; deep blue background with gold highlights, peacocks perched on pillars, emphasizing purity before darśana."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"meditative","suggested_raga":"Bhupali","pace":"slow-meditative","voice_tone":"reverent-soft","sound_elements":["flowing water","soft temple bells","conch shell (distant)","silence between phrases"]}

FAQs

It defines bodily śauca as the practice that removes odor and grime, because contact with bodily filth makes even a clean person impure.

Primarily external (bodily) purity—cleaning the body to remove physical impurity, smell, and residue.

Cleanliness is treated as a dharmic discipline: one should actively remove sources of impurity rather than assume purity is permanent.
