Omens and Consolation after Loss; Reaffirmation of the Saindhava Punishment Vow
brahmovāca mṛtyo saṅkalpitāsi tvaṁ prajāsaṁhārahetunā | gaccha saṁhara sarvāstv iṁ prajā mā te vicāraṇā ||
The verse frames death as an ordained function within cosmic order: Mṛtyu is created with a defined duty (saṁhāra), and is instructed to perform it without wavering. Ethically, it emphasizes role-based duty (svadharma) rather than personal hesitation when executing a divinely assigned function.
A divine instruction is being recalled: Brahmā addresses the personified Death and commands it to proceed with the ending of beings’ lives, reminding Death that its very origin is for the purpose of dissolution and that it should not entertain contrary thoughts.
