Droṇa’s Rebuke to Duryodhana after Jayadratha’s Fall
pāṇḍavānāṃ mahābāho tāvakānāṃ ca saṃyuge | rudrasyākrīḍasadṛśaḥ saṃhāraḥ sarvadehinām, rājan |
The verse underscores the ethical horror of war: once violence escalates, the battlefield becomes an indiscriminate ‘saṃhāra’ for all embodied beings. By invoking Rudra, it frames mass death as a cosmic, terrifying force that overwhelms personal claims and attachments.
Sañjaya reports to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the clash between the Pāṇḍavas and the Kaurava troops has intensified into a dreadful slaughter. The battlefield is compared to Rudra’s ‘playground,’ suggesting a cremation-ground-like scene of widespread killing.
