इमे वै बन्धुदायादा: षटू् पुत्रा धर्मदर्शने । षडेवाबन्धुदायादा: पुत्रास्ताउछूणु मे पृथे
vaiśampāyana uvāca | ime vai bandhudāyādāḥ ṣaṭ putrā dharmadarśane | ṣaḍ evābandhudāyādāḥ putrās tāñ chṛṇu me pṛthe ||
वैशम्पायन उवाच— धर्मदर्शने शास्त्रे षट् पुत्रा ‘बन्धुदायादा’ इति कीर्तिताः, ये गृह्यत्वात् धनस्य दायादाः। तथा षट् ‘अबन्धुदायादा’ इति पुत्राः, ये बन्धुत्वेन न तथापि दायादत्वेन निर्दिष्टाः। एतान् सर्वान् मे शृणु, हे पृथे।
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse frames a dharma-based classification of sons for purposes of inheritance: six are ‘bandhu-dāyāda’ (kinsmen-heirs within the household line), and six are ‘a-bandhu-dāyāda’ (not kinsmen in the same strict sense, yet still granted inheritance rights).
Vaiśampāyana introduces a legal-ethical enumeration: he is about to describe categories of sons recognized by dharma literature and their status as heirs, addressing the listener as Pṛthā (Kuntī).
