Varaha Purana 3.7 — Adhyaya 3, Shloka 7

Nārada’s Account of a Former Birth and a Hymn to Nārāyaṇa

ततोऽहं निर्गतो राजंस्तपसे धृतमानसः । सारस्वतं नाम सरो यदेतत् पुष्करं स्मृतम् ॥ ३.७ ॥

tato ’haṃ nirgato rājaṃs tapase dhṛtamānasaḥ | sārasvataṃ nāma saro yad etat puṣkaraṃ smṛtam || 3.7 ||

Затем, о царь, я отправился, с умом, твердо устремлённым к тапасу (аскезе), к озеру по имени Сарасвата — к тому самому, что помнят как Пушкару.

FAQs

It preserves a toponymic equivalence—identifying a lake called Sārasvata with Puṣkara—illustrating how Purāṇic literature functions as a repository of sacred-geographic memory and place-name traditions.

Puṣkara is named explicitly, presented here as the lake (saraḥ) also called Sārasvata; in modern scholarship Puṣkara is commonly associated with the Puṣkara region and lake near Ajmer, Rajasthan, though the verse itself only states the traditional identification.

The verse foregrounds disciplined intention (dhṛtamānasaḥ) directed toward tapas, presenting ethical self-governance and purposeful conduct as a valued principle within the narrative.
