Varaha Purana 14.40 — Adhyaya 14, Shloka 40

Ritual Procedure for Śrāddha: Sequence, Eligibility, and Offerings to Ancestors

mātāmahānām apy evaṁ saha devaiḥ kramaḥ smṛtaḥ | bhojane ca svaśaktyā ca dāne tadvad visarjane | āpādaśaucanāt pūrvaṁ kuryād eva dvijanmasu || 14.40 ||

FAQs

It preserves a Dharma-oriented ritual protocol within Purāṇic literature, indicating how ancestral rites were systematized (order, offerings, and formal dismissal) and extended to maternal-line ancestors alongside deities.

No explicit geographic location is named in this verse; the content is procedural and ritual rather than topographical.

Ritual generosity should be proportionate to one’s means (svaśaktyā), and actions should follow an established order (krama), emphasizing disciplined conduct and measured giving.
