Adhyaya 39 — Yoga Discipline: Posture, Breath Control, Sense Withdrawal, and Signs of Attainment
vivardhayati nārohet tasmād bhūmim anirjitām / prāṇānām upasaṃrodhāt prāṇāyāma iti smṛtaḥ //

The passage combines definition with prudence: prāṇāyāma is regulation of prāṇa, but it must be undertaken on a stable foundation; otherwise it amplifies latent disorders rather than removing them.
Instructional yoga material (ācāra) embedded in the Purāṇa; not one of the five marks, but aligned with dharma and mokṣa-oriented teaching.
Restraint of prāṇa concentrates life-force; if the ‘ground’ (mind-body purification) is not prepared, intensified prāṇa energizes unresolved vāsanās, experienced as agitation or illness.
