Renewed Summons to the Dice-Game and Exile Wager
sā kṛṣyamāṇā namitāṅgayaṣṭiḥ śanair uvāca atha rajasvalāsmi | ekaṃ ca vāso mama mandabuddhe sabhāṃ netuṃ nārhasi mām anārya ||
The verse highlights the boundary of dharma even amid political conflict: humiliating a vulnerable person—especially a woman brought by force into a public court—constitutes adharma. Draupadī’s appeal is both ethical and juridical: she asserts that coercion and public shaming are illegitimate, regardless of the aggressor’s power.
Draupadī is being forcibly dragged toward the royal assembly by Duḥśāsana. Bent and distressed, she protests that she is menstruating and clothed in only one garment, and therefore it is improper and disgraceful to take her into the sabhā.
