Agni Purana — Veda-vidhana & Vamsha, Shloka 6

Devapūjā, Vaiśvadeva Offering, and Bali (देवपूजावैश्वदेवबलिः)

गन्धं स्वधेति क , ग ,घ , ज च यत् किञ्चिदेवमादि स्यात्सावित्रेण निवेदयेत् पौरुषन्तु जपेत् सूक्तं तदेव जुहुयात्तथा

gandhaṃ svadheti ka , ga ,gha , ja ca yat kiñcidevamādi syātsāvitreṇa nivedayet pauruṣantu japet sūktaṃ tadeva juhuyāttathā

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Procedure","entry_title":"Sāvitrī-nivedana and Pauruṣa-sūkta Homa-prayoga","lookup_keywords":["Sāvitrī","Gāyatrī","Pauruṣa-sūkta","homa","nivedana"],"quick_summary":"Offer items like fragrance using the Sāvitrī (Gāyatrī) formula; then recite the Pauruṣa-sūkta and employ that same hymn for the fire-offering (juhuyāt)."}

Concept: Yajña aligns micro-acts (offering dravya) with macro-order (Puruṣa as cosmic totality); mantra is the bridge between act and meaning.

Application: In domestic/temple homa, keep a fixed mantra-sequence: Gāyatrī for nivedana, then Pauruṣa-sūkta for japa and the corresponding āhuti to maintain ritual coherence.

Khanda Section: Puja-vidhi / Agnihotra and Mantra-prayoga (Vedic ritual procedure)

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A homa altar with blazing fire; the officiant offers gandha and other items while reciting Gāyatrī, then chants the Pauruṣa-sūkta and pours oblations into the fire in rhythm with the hymn.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural, square homa-kuṇḍa with stylized flames, priest chanting with palm-leaf manuscript, offering ladle in hand, sacred smoke patterns, earthy palette and temple ambience.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting, radiant homa fire with gold highlights, priest and assistants, ladle and offering bowls, divine cosmic motif subtly behind (Puruṣa symbolism), ornate borders and gold leaf.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting, instructional homa scene: clearly drawn kuṇḍa, sruk/sruva, offering bowls, sequence implied by gestures (first nivedana then āhuti), soft colors and fine lines.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, detailed fire-ritual in a pavilion courtyard, precise rendering of utensils and flames, priest reciting, attendants holding offerings, intricate architectural and textile detail."}

Sandhi Resolution Notes:

FAQs

It prescribes a specific mantra-procedure: offerings like fragrances are to be formally presented with the Sāvitrī (Gāyatrī) formula, followed by recitation of the Pauruṣa-sūkta, and the same hymn is used for the homa oblation.

It demonstrates the text’s practical ritual handbook style—linking offering-substances, classification markers, and precise Vedic mantras (Sāvitrī and Puruṣa-sūkta) into an executable homa/nivedana protocol.

By aligning offerings with authoritative Vedic mantras, the act is ritually ‘sealed’ (saṃskṛta), aiming at purification, correctness of sacrifice, and merit (puṇya) through properly mantra-consecrated oblations.
