FAQs

It functions as a formal transition into a cosmographic catalogue typical of Purāṇic literature, signaling an ordered exposition of the world-system (dvīpas and samudras) used in premodern South Asian intellectual geography.

Jambūdvīpa is named as the principal continent in Purāṇic cosmography; it is not a single modern cartographic region, but a schematic world-continent that later traditions sometimes correlate broadly with the known human world (often associated with Bhārata-varṣa as a sub-region).

No direct ethical injunction is stated here; the verse primarily introduces a descriptive, classificatory account of the world, supporting cultural-historical understanding of place, space, and cosmological order.
