Shiva Purana — Vayaviya Samhita, Shloka 21

The Vision of Dakṣa’s Great Sacrifice

and the Onset of Vīrabhadra’s Terror

FAQs

It highlights that even truthful and well-intended speech can fail to produce transformation when the deeper binding forces (pāśa) are not loosened; the seeker must turn toward higher wisdom and grace, ultimately fulfilled through devotion to Pati (Śiva) and right knowledge.

The verse implies the limitation of mere discourse or persuasion; in Shaiva practice, effectiveness comes when words are joined to sādhana—Linga worship, mantra-japa, and bhakti—so that truth becomes lived realization by Śiva’s anugraha (grace).

A practical takeaway is to move from speech alone to disciplined practice: japa of the Pañcākṣara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) with Linga-pūjā, and steady dhyāna—so the mind does not become manda (spiritually fatigued) and the teaching bears fruit.
