Questions on Rudra’s Supremacy and His ‘Sonship’ to Brahmā
Sages (Munis) addressing Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Īśāna
Type: stotra
Role: teaching
The verse shows the proper Shaiva approach to liberation: humble inquiry, firm faith (śraddhā), and eagerness to hear Śiva’s tattva and glory. In Shaiva Siddhanta, right knowledge arises through authoritative teaching and devoted listening, leading the soul (paśu) toward Śiva (Pati).
By asking to hear the Lord’s glory immediately, the sages indicate that devotion begins with śravaṇa (hearing) of Īśvara’s names, forms, and deeds—supporting Saguna worship such as Linga-upāsanā, which stabilizes devotion and prepares the mind for grasping deeper tattva.
The implied practice is śravaṇa and manana—listening to Śiva-kathā with faith and reflecting on it. As a practical takeaway, one may pair this with daily japa of the Panchākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) while studying or hearing the Purāṇa.
