Description of the Form of Śabda-Brahman
Sūta Gosvāmi (narrating Shiva Purana teachings to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Mantra: oṃ (om om)
Type: gayatri
Role: teaching
Cosmic Event: Vedic identification of the supreme creator with Praṇava; triadic manifestation (interpretively: icchā-jñāna-kriyā or three functions/levels)
The verse identifies Shiva as Pati—the sovereign cause of all worlds—and points to the Praṇava (Om) as His primary sonic revelation, indicating that contemplation of Om leads the bound soul (paśu) toward liberation through Shiva’s grace.
Though Om is a subtle (nirguṇa-oriented) symbol, the Shiva Purana treats it as inseparable from Saguna worship: Om sanctifies Linga-pūjā and mantra-japa, making the visible Linga a support for meditating on the formless Lord.
Practice steady japa and meditation on the Praṇava “Om” (often repeated reverentially), and integrate it as the opening seed before Panchākṣarī japa (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) during daily worship or Mahāśivarātri observances.
