Soma Pavamāna (with addressed companions/priests as agents)

Inside Sukta 101

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The priests/companions rally around the pressed Soma and command the removal of a guarding, obstructive force (“long-tongued hound”), clearing the threshold for the victorious draught.

  2. Development

Soma is invoked as the strongest, most ‘worthy of hearing,’ asked to bring sustaining wealth and power that reaches the ‘fivefold peoples,’ while his purification and forward surge are repeatedly emphasized.

  3. Climax

Soma’s purified, roaring strength is pictured at full intensity—bull-like and tawny—moving decisively toward Indra’s prepared, open field where victory and release are secured.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn settles into the image of Soma fully clarified through the filters, fit for divine reception, concluding with his successful movement into Indra’s domain and the rite’s fulfilled aim.

The deity: Soma Pavamāna

  • In the VedaSoma is the pressed plant-essence and also a radiant, living power that “purifies” (pavamāna) as it runs through the filter, roaring like a bull, tawny and exhilarating, fit for Indra and the gods.
  • Cosmic functionHe mediates between earth and heaven as the sacrificial current: purifier, invigorator, and distributor of strength, wealth, and inspired speech; he prepares the divine drink that sustains Indra’s victory and the rite’s success.
  • Inner significanceThe clarified flow symbolizes the mind/energy refined through discipline—impulses strained of dross, becoming lucid vitality that supports courage, clarity, and inspired hearing (śravas).

The seer

  • Bhṛgu-line seer(s) (attribution uncertain at verse level)Bhṛgu (Bhr̥gava) tradition; Pavamāna Soma corpus attribution · Associated with early sacrificial and Soma-pressing lore; the Bhṛgus are remembered as transmitters of fire/rite knowledge and powerful poetic formulations in the Soma and Agni domains.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is about Soma as he is pressed and purified (pavamāna) through the filter, becoming a powerful offering that brings strength, wealth, and success in the sacrifice.

It is a poetic image for an obstructing or guarding force at the threshold—symbolizing impurities or hindrances that must be driven away so Soma can flow freely and be offered.

Indra is the chief drinker of Soma in many Vedic rites; purified Soma is said to empower Indra’s victorious force, so the hymn pictures Soma streaming toward Indra’s prepared ‘open space.’
