The Origin of Rāvaṇa

Concept: Tapas can yield immense worldly siddhis and royal prosperity when directed to a deity; yet such boons remain within saṃsāra unless yoked to dharma and (in Padma’s Vaishnava frame) ultimately to Viṣṇu-bhakti.

Application: Use discipline to build capacity, but examine goals: seek character and devotion over mere power; treat achievements as instruments for dharma.

FAQs

It lists three results: residence in Laṅkā, attainment of the Manovega vimāna (a mind-swift aerial chariot), and the prosperities of kingship.

It frames the fruits as arising specifically from tapas that pleases Śiva—implying that divine satisfaction, not mere effort, is the decisive cause of the boons.

The verse implies that extraordinary attainments (status, mobility, sovereignty) are portrayed as consequences of disciplined practice directed toward divine approval, rather than arbitrary fortune.
