Yayāti’s Abdication and Pūru’s Coronation (ययाति-पूोरु-राज्याभिषेकः)
प्रसाद्यतां देवयानी जीवितं यत्र मे स्थितम् । योगक्षेमकरस्ते5हमिन्द्रस्पेव बृहस्पति:,तुम देवयानीको प्रसन्न करो, क्योंकि उसीमें मेरे प्राण बसते हैं। उसके प्रसन्न हो जानेपर इन्द्रके पुरोहित बृहस्पतिकी भाँति मैं तुम्हारे योगक्षेमका वहन करता रहूँगा
prasādyatāṃ devayānī jīvitaṃ yatra me sthitam | yogakṣemakaras te 'ham indrasyeva bṛhaspatiḥ ||
Śukra disse: “Que Devayānī seja apaziguada, pois nela está depositada a minha própria vida. Se ela se agradar, assegurarei o vosso bem-estar e proteção—assim como Bṛhaspati, sacerdote de Indra, sustenta a prosperidade e a segurança de Indra.”
शुक्र उवाच
The verse emphasizes reconciliation and the ethical priority of honoring and appeasing the one whose well-being is intimately tied to one’s own—here, Devayānī. It also frames responsible leadership as ensuring both prosperity (yoga) and security (kṣema) for others, modeled on the ideal minister-priest relationship of Bṛhaspati to Indra.
Śukra urges that Devayānī must be pacified, declaring that his own life depends on her. He promises that once she is pleased, he will act as a benefactor who safeguards the other party’s welfare and security, likening his role to Bṛhaspati’s supportive role for Indra.
